WHAT I LOOK FOR IN A STUDENT

I feel that all students have different styles and rates of learning.  The rate of progress is less important than the following qualities in a student:
  • a desire to learn
  • an ability to be open to new ideas
  • a positive attitude during the lesson
  • a willingness to take and follow direction
  • a willingness to ask questions and challenge ideas that don't seem logical
  • a willingness to practice the things we explore during the lesson

PRACTICE

Practice is expected of each student.  Without daily practice, mastery of the skills and concepts is very difficult.  There is a direct link between progress and practice time.

PRACTICE DOES NOT MEAN TO QUICKLY PLAY THROUGH YOUR PIECES ONE OR TWO TIMES.

SLOW PRACTICE is the best way to truly learn your pieces well.

FAST PRACTICE is the absolute worst way!

Remember:  Practice doesn't make perfect, it makes permanent, therefore, it is important to practice carefully.

Try to set a regular time for practice and do not deviate from it.  It will become a habit after a while and teaches children a valuable lessons:  anything can be attained with hard work and consistent effort.

I realize that we are all human beings and our best intentions do not always come to pass.  Discipline and consistency in practice is something that challenges even the best pianist.  As the teacher, I will work closely with each student to develop patterns and habits to improve each practice session both at home and in the studio.

PARENT PARTICIPATION

Parents are welcome to sit in on the lesson.  Parents of young children are encouraged to sit in during a lesson.  I ask you not to interfere in the lesson in any way.  The purpose of having a parent present is so that you can get a sense of the student's progress as well as being able to ask any questions concerning theory, technique or any other part of the assignment.

I will reserve the last five minutes of your child's lesson to discuss any concerns you may have.   If our conversation cannot be completed during the five minutes allotted, please feel free to reach me by telephone at:  (954) 203-1233 or
slowiks_studio@hotmail.com .  I will try to and return your call by the end of the next business day.

CALENDAR

The studio calendar is provided to assist you in scheduling doctor visits, dental appointments, and teacher conferences as well as anything else that may result in missing a regularly scheduled lesson.  The calendar lists the weeks that we will be having lessons and the many events in which our studio participates.  Please take the time to mark them in a prominent place on your home calendars to ensure that you do not miss any important deadlines or performances.
